Mahjong Games variants we cover

Mahjong on GamersHell splits into four mainstream variants: Mahjong Solitaire, Mahjong Connect, Classic Mahjong, and Themed Mahjong.

Mahjong Solitaire

Mahjong Solitaire deals 144 tiles into a layered pyramid (Turtle layout). You match pairs of identical free tiles, tiles with no tile on top and at least one side free, working layer by layer.

Mahjong Connect

Mahjong Connect drops the layered pyramid and flattens tiles into a single board. You link pairs of identical tiles with a connection line that turns at most twice. Faster pace, more spatial planning.

Classic Mahjong

Classic Mahjong uses the traditional Shanghai layout: 144 tiles in a centred turtle-shape with five layers. Same matching rules as Solitaire, but the specific geometry creates the puzzle's character.

Themed Mahjong

Themed Mahjong wraps the same matching engine in seasonal or stylistic art: Christmas trees and ornaments instead of bamboo and dragons, Halloween pumpkins instead of winds, animals instead of characters.

How to play Mahjong Games

Mahjong is played by removing pairs of identical free tiles from a layered layout until the whole board is cleared.

Controls

Click first tile
Select a free tile
Click second tile
Match it with the first (if identical and both free)
Hint button
Highlight one valid pair currently available
Undo
Reverse the last match (limited uses in some games)
Shuffle
Reorganise remaining tiles when stuck (penalty applies in scored modes)

Tips

  1. Read the board by scanning the top layer for tiles that are visibly free (nothing on top, at least one side open).
  2. Spot identical pairs where identical means same suit and same character or number; Seasons match any Season, Flowers match any Flower.
  3. Match the top layer first because clearing tiles from above frees the tiles below; greedy lower matches can leave unclearable tiles up top.
  4. Plan around bottlenecks: when four identical tiles are visible, match the pair that frees the most blocked tiles below.
  5. Use Hints sparingly because hints are limited in scored modes and break flow in untimed modes.
  6. Clear all 144 tiles from the board to complete the layout and win the round.

Why Mahjong Games stands out

GamersHell stocks 78 Mahjong games covering every mainstream variant, the widest Mahjong selection in our catalog runnable instantly in the browser.

  • 78 distinct Mahjong titles. Solitaire layouts, Connect variants, Classic Shanghai, plus seasonal themed sets: real variety, not the same engine reskinned ten times.
  • Smooth tile rendering on mobile. Tile size scales to fingertip-tappable on phone screens. The double-tap-to-match gesture works the same as click-click on desktop.
  • No login, no download. Every Mahjong game loads in the browser tab and starts immediately. No app store detour, no email gate, no account.
  • Layouts beyond the standard Turtle. Pyramid, Cross, Castle, and seasonal layouts mean the spatial pattern actually changes between games, not just the tile artwork.

Mahjong Games FAQ

Mahjong on GamersHell answers common questions below about variants, rules, free access, mobile play, and the difference between Solitaire and Connect.

How do you play Mahjong Solitaire?
Mahjong Solitaire is played by matching pairs of identical free tiles to remove them from a layered layout. A tile is free when no other tile sits on top and at least one side is open. Clear the whole layout to win.
Are Mahjong games free on GamersHell?
Yes, every Mahjong game on GamersHell is free to play in your browser with no download or signup required. All 78 titles across Solitaire, Connect, Classic, and Themed variants stay free.
What is the difference between Mahjong Solitaire and Mahjong Connect?
Mahjong Solitaire uses a layered 3D layout where tiles stack and you match freely-accessible ones. Mahjong Connect uses a flat single-layer board where you link matching tiles with a path that turns at most twice.
What is the best Mahjong layout for beginners?
The Turtle layout (the classic Shanghai Solitaire) is the standard beginner entry point because every tile is visible and removing the top layer first is the obvious strategy. Try classic Solitaire titles before Pyramid, Cross, or themed.
Can you play Mahjong on mobile?
Yes, every Mahjong game on GamersHell renders responsively for mobile browsers with touch tap-to-select and tap-to-match. Tile sizing scales to fingertip targets without forcing pinch-zoom. No app install required.
How many tiles are in a Mahjong game?
A full Mahjong set uses 144 tiles across three suits (Bamboo, Characters, Circles) numbered 1 to 9, plus four Winds, three Dragons, four Seasons, and four Flowers. Themed variants keep the 144-tile count with re-skinned art.
What are Mahjong Seasons and Flowers tiles?
Seasons and Flowers are the only tiles in Mahjong Solitaire that do not need an exact match. Any Season tile matches any other Season; any Flower tile matches any other Flower. Each set of four gives eight wildcard-style pairs.
